MSC Patran 2024.2 Release Highlights
Rotordynamics
New rotordynamics capabilities offer faster, more user-friendly solutions. The updated graphical interface eases the flow of analysis and adds additional functionality.
-Rotor analysis setup support for transient dynamic analysis in implicit nonlinear SOL400:Perform rotor analysis for transient dynamics analysis with an implicit nonlinear preference. Prepare the rotor model and set up the job with gyroscopic effects, extending the support of RBAX3D, PAXSYMH, and LBCs (NOLIN1, NOLIN2, NOLIN3, NOLIN4, NLRGAP, NLRSFD) in SOL400.
-Superelement support in rotordynamics:Part superelements in Rotordynamics analysis are supported for single and multiple rotor definitions. Rotors are written to SOL 103 input decks for external superelement creation. Manual and Automatic Assembly options add to EXTSEOUT Automatic QSET support (PARAM, AUTOQSET). The benefits are:
. Enhanced collaboration: Superelements can mask proprietary information, allowing for safer sharing of virtual prototypes with customers and subcontractors.
. Localized re-analysis: When changes are made to a design, only the affected superelement needs to be re-analyzed, saving time and computational effort.
. Increased efficiency: By breaking down large structures into smaller substructures (superelements), MSC Nastran can solve equations more efficiently. This means faster solution times and reduced computational resource requirements.
Monitor points
-Pre- and post-processing for monitor points 1, monitor points 2 and monitor points 3:Define an integrated load monitor point at a point (x, y, z). The user is also able to define the element monitor output results Item. 'Sum select grid' point sets the grid point to a user-selected monitor point

-Meshing and hexahedral elements:Linear and reduced integration hexahedrons are the preferred element formulation when dealing with explicit FEA solvers (e.g. Dytran) because of their robustness in high-deformation problems and result in fewer numerical issues (volumetric or bending locking). A new tool is available to split tetrahedral elements (linear or parabolic) into linear hexahedral elements. Linear TET4 elements can experience significant numerical issues (volumetric and bending locking) and parabolic TET10 elements are less robust with high deformation engineering problems. However, as it is generally simpler to mesh parts with tetrahedral elements, it may be convenient to first mesh parts with tetrahedrons and then use this split tool to take advantage of hexahedrons for the simulation.
-Part-based model organization:Access and handle model data based on parts and assembly structures for improved competitiveness. The hierarchical container allows users to create, modify, visualize and export model data. This model organization makes even complex models simpler to work with. This improves productivity, efficiency, and usability while providing a modern look and feel.

Quick-access functionality
-Custom tool sets:Create custom groups of desired sets of tool buttons in a new container widget called 'tool-set' which is highly customizable (e.g. resizable, dockable, colour-coded, transparent, or portable).
-Title bar:A new title bar widget can be extended to incorporate additional widgets. This title bar is used as an 'application panel' to quickly switch between open application forms.
-Tear-off menus:The menus and sub-menus available within the classic menu bar can be kept open for quick access using a clickable handle bar on the top of each menu.
-MBT transparency:The model browser window can now change transparency using the 'Ctrl + Shift + Wheel' keyboard command.
32/64bit hybrid HDF5 support & improvement
-Enhanced MSC Nastran access results:Dramatically reduce ✅File Sizes by attaching HDF5 files to support MSC Nastran 2024.2 H5 files using the HDF5OUT, PRCISION, and 6432 hybrid formats. The H5 PRCISION 6432 hybrid format addresses a bug in which a H5 PRCISION 32 file with more than 2^31 result lines creates a corrupted h5 file due to negative position numbers in the INDEX dataset.
